Statement of Things

Glass has existed for more than 4,000 years but recently due to the innovation, research and experimentation of artists such as Harvey K. Littleton the Studio Glass movement was created in order stray away from its utilitarian confine. Sixty years later with a strong craft and technical foundation within the field of glass, I expounded upon this knowledge to divert from its traditional means to propagate a new age of innovation and making.

Contemporary influences such as Duchamp, Judd, and Atoni forced me to experiment continuously in order to redefine what is considered glass and its limitations. By combining the knowledge of traditional glass fusing/silkscreen printing, I pushed glass powder through a fine mesh to create thin sheets of glass by heating the powder at 1200 degrees Fahrenheit and laminated the material with a rubber.Scientifically there are patents for flexible glass but its limitation are that they cannot be folded or scratched. In return, I have created glass that can be cut, sewn, folded, torn and fused with hand pressure to create new art work that creates unique intimate moments that cannot be experienced ever again in effort to highlight the ephemeral qualities of these objects. Besides creating new work in my own portfolio, the final outcome is to create a dialogue of what glass is defined as in order to inspire other artists to not just create artwork but to innovate their field in the process.
